Councillor criticises council target culture

Bishopthorpe councillor John Galvin, has spoken against plans by City of York Council to create a target for how long it takes to drive a mile in the morning rush hour.

John Galvin, who has been chairman of the York Transport Action Group, said: “In my opinion, targets do not mean a thing.

“It’s about what we do to improve the traffic flow, quite frankly. You can have all the targets in the world, but until we do things like dual the outer ring road with proper fly-overs, you will not change anything.”

Councillor supports Poppleton to London train

Rural West York councillor Ian Gillies has spoken out in favour of Harrogate Trains Limited's plans to start a new service between Harrogate, Poppleton and London.

Harrogate Trains, from the company that runs Hull Trains, have proposed that 8 trains a day should be used on the route.

Conservative councillor Gillies argued that the service would not only help Poppleton and York residents, but boost the local economy.

However, Network Rail have expressed doubts about the plans for fear of over-crowded tracks but the Office of Rail Regulation will make a final decision.
